Twitter files for IPO chirps announcement in a tweet

Not a very secret IPO, Twitter

Twitter files for IPO, chirps announcement in a tweet

Twitter is following Facebooks lead and going public.
The microblogging site announced in appropriate 140-character form that it has "confidentially submitted" its IPO registration with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

We asked for follow up from Twitter, and were told that the only comment its offering is its tweet.
The company is taking advantage of a new "secret" IPO provision in 2012s JOBs Act. According to Business Insider, companies with less than $1 billion (about £63m, AU$1.07b) in revenue can submit an initial SEC filing without having to make documents typically associated with the process public.

Twitters financials dont have to become public until 21 days before its "roadshow," or the time it wil pitch its stock to investors.

Facebooks footsteps

Weirdly, news of Twitters filing comes one day after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was asked at TechCrunch Disrupt if he had any advice for Twitter on its then unannounced but fully expected IPO.

"Im kind of the person youd want to ask last about how to make a smooth IPO," Zuckerberg said to chuckles, referring to Facebooks problem-laden public offering.

76 000 Pounds Of Ribs Charred Way Before Their Time In Semi Truck Fire

(Morton

What could’ve been. Oh, what could’ve been. (Morton Fox)

These days it would pay to have some kind of Spilled Food Alert app because seriously, it’s starting to sound like a misdirected barbecue out there: Following on the wheels of two different trucks that spewed beer and 40,000 pounds of chicken, respectively, another truck lost 76,000 pounds of ribs after catching fire over the weekend. Oh, the waste.

The beer and chicken spills in Georgia would’ve gone nicely with this most recent impromptu beef rib cookout in California.

It took authorities two hours to reopen westbound lanes of a freeway after the semi-truck’s flaming disaster, reports The San Bernardino County Sun.

The grilling started when the rear trails of the trailer went up in flames around 6 p.m. Saturday night. By the time firefighters had stopped at the store for sides (kidding, kidding), the truck had separated from the trailer, which was fully engulfed in flames.

Despite the likely disappointment of rib lovers over such a waste, firefighters said this was no ordinary truck fire.

It was just what you’d see from other fires except that there was a “wonderful BBQ beef rib odor to it,” the fire department’s report read.

The overly crispy ribs met their ultimate demise after 6,500 gallons of water was dumped on the fire to extinguish it over the course of two hours. No word on whether any attempt was made to rescue even one poor little edible rib.

Nintendo reports poor Wii U sales in holiday season slashes 2014 targets for console

Japanese gaming giant Nintendo on Friday warned it would swing back into the red this fiscal year as it slashed its annual sales target for the Wii U game console, blaming a poor performance over the festive holiday.

The surprise revision came in marked contrast to rivals Sony and Microsoft who have seen huge demand for their new consoles as the firms battle for control of a sector worth about $44 billion annually.

Nintendo said Friday it expects a loss of 25 billion yen ($240 million) in the year to March, reversing an earlier 55 billion yen net profit forecast, while annual revenue would drop 36 percent to 590 billion yen.

The company, maker of the Donkey Kong and Super Mario brands, also said it expected to sell just 2.8 million units worldwide of the Wii U, way off earlier predictions of 9.0 million consoles.

Nintendo said its hopes for big holiday season demand were dashed, forcing it to chop forecasts as demand for the consoles high-margin software slumped.

"As hardware sales failed to reach expected levels during the year-end sales season, sales of software, which have a high profit-margin, fell significantly below our forecast," it said in a statement.

Nintendos top executive is to hold a news briefing in Osaka later in the day.

The downgrade came as key domestic rival Sony saw record demand for its new PlayStation 4 console, which had already sold more than 4.2 million units by the start of the year.

(Also see: Sony PlayStation 4: 4.2 million, Microsoft Xbox One: 3 million)

The console was launched on November 15.

US rival Microsoft has also seen robust demand for its Xbox One console, which sold more than one million units in the 24 hours after its November release.

(Also see: Xbox One sales top one million units in first 24 hours: Microsoft)

For Nintendo, the latest forecast is especially disappointing after it scratched back to profitability in the six months to September thanks to a sharply weaker yen, which inflates Japanese firms repatriated profits.

The company has previously blamed weak earnings partly on high development and marketing costs for the Wii U, although sales of its 3DS handheld console and related game titles fared better.

Nintendo, which cut prices for both products to shore up flagging sales, launched the Wii U in late 2012 with high hopes it would repeat the original Wiis blockbuster success.

But analysts said a lack of games took away some of the fizz the company had been hoping for after the 3DS the worlds first video game console with a 3D screen that works without special glasses had initially suffered from disappointing demand abroad.

Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are giants in the global videogames industry, but have faced tough economic conditions in their key US and European markets, while also fending off a challenge from cheap or sometimes free downloadable games for smartphones and tablets.

Nintendos Tokyo-listed shares ended down 2.75 percent at 14,645 yen on Friday, before the firm made its announcement.

Microsoft Offers 100 Credit For People Who Trade In PS3 For Xbox One

You

You can trade in your PS3 for $100 off an Xbox One, or you can just buy a PS4 that is already $100 less expensive (photo: jpghouse)

Want an Xbox One but you’re put off by the $499 sticker price? If you’re willing to part with your PS3 or certain newer models of the Xbox 360, and you live near a Microsoft store, there’s a deal you might be interested in.

Microsoft is currently offering a $100 trade-in credit for customers who bring in their old PS3, Xbox 360 E or Xbox 360 S (the two models still currently in production) to Microsoft stores and buy a new Xbox One.

That brings the Xbox One price down to $399, which matches the cost of Sony’s new PS4 console.

As The Verge points out, a new PS3 still goes for about $200 so trading in an old one for $100 in credit against a new console might be a better deal than you’re likely to get trying to sell the used console.

The Xbox 360 trade-in is trickier, as this offer is only limited to relatively newer models of the console, meaning those of us with 360s older than many elementary school kids are out of luck.

Of course, regardless of which console you trade in, you’re giving up access to all the games you purchased over the years, as the Xbox One is not backwards compatible, nor has Microsoft revealed specifics on a plan that would give Xbox One owners online or cloud-based access to all those games.

So PS3 owners with a decent library of games may just want to hold onto their consoles and spend $399 on a PS4 (when it has more than a handful of titles available to play).

Smartphone Data Usage Took a Massive Jump in 2013

samsung-galaxy-s4

With smartphones becoming as popular as they are, it kind of goes without saying that many of us are using them because of convenience. Access to mobile data networks can be incredibly handy, whether you’re just trying to kill some time, find a place to eat when you’re already on the go, or hunt down the nearest repair shop in the event of car troubles while you’re on the road. Most of us make use of the mobile data functionality our smartphones offer, but you might be a little surprised to find out that mobile data usage is still on the rise year-over-year and these jumps don’t show any signs of slowing down in the future.

A new report from Amdocs subsidiary Actix (via FierceWireless) claims that mobile data usage in 2013 rose by 40% over the previous year. That’s a pretty massive increase when you consider that the number of new smartphone users has to be slowing down at this point. So, what gives? While Actix points out that increases in mobile data usage were once due to people upgrading from feature phones to smartphones for the first time, these days the jumps are driven by folks upgrading from low-end devices to higher-end handsets. Oh, and for the record, data consumption in 2013 was seven times higher than it was in 2009, so just let that sink in for a moment.

According to the report, iPhone users are the data usage kings, consuming about twice the amount of data as Android users in a given session, with the iPhone 4, 4S, and 5 ranking at the top of the list. Smartphones comprise a whopping 95% of data network traffic, but that doesn’t mean tablets aren’t contributing to the uptick. Actix director of global marketing Neil Coleman points out that connected tablet users average twice the data consumption as smartphone users, so this is more about install bases than anything else. That could all be changing in the future as low-cost tablets hit store shelves in a big way, so Coleman warns that carriers should prepare their networks to handle the onslaught of new tablets.

Is this going to slow down as we move further away from the introduction of the first smartphone? That doesn’t seem likely, with Coleman saying that each new generation brings with it a 40% rise in data usage. With manufacturers releasing new generations of their flagship models on a yearly basis, mobile data consumption will keep rising at a breakneck pace, so here’s hoping that the likes of Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint can handle what’s to come.
