ASUS Padfone Mini is official

In the tradition of offering less powerful, and hopefully less expensive, versions of a hit product, ASUS has unveiled the ASUS PadFone Mini in Taiwan. So far, all the rumored specs have panned out, making this unique device somewhat of a disappointment but, at the same time, probably a more affordable alternative to those who want such a hybrid device.

The smartphone itself clocks a bit larger than previous speculated specs, with a 4.3-inch diagonal span. The resolution, however, was on the mark at 960×540 pixels. The phone runs on a 1.4 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU, with 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. Buyers will also be given 5 GB worth of ASUS WebStorage and can also opt to expand capacity with a microSD card. The smartphone has an 8 megapixel rear camera with an LED flash and f/2.0 aperture, while the front sports a 2 megapixel camera. The tablet dock measures 7 inches and has a screen resolution of 1280×800. It also sports its own 2200 mAh battery. Together, the contraption will weigh 415 g, combining the smartphone’s 105 g with the tablet’s 310 g weight.

While the PadFone Mini’s reason for existence might make sense on some level, offering buyers another size option, the recently seen PadFone E doesn’t. This latter one seems to be a hybrid of a hybrid form factor, offering a 4.7-inch smartphone that is only slightly smaller than the PadFone Infinity’s 5 inches but, at the same time, gets paired up with an equally large 10.1-inch tablet dock. Below is ASUS’ promotional video for the PadFone Mini, which shows the device with dual SIM support similar to the rumored PadFone E.

Details of the availability of the ASUS PadFone Mini have not yet been disclosed and it is unknown which Taiwanese carriers will be offering the device. It is, however, expected to sell for 11,900 NTD, or around $400. Three color options of chocolate black, white, and cherry milk were advertised but only the black models are available so far.

IFA 2013 Alcatel OneTouch Idol Alpha idol S and idol mini unveiled

Alcatel is a busy bee today, announcing a full portfolio of new phones and a "modular" tablet. In addition to the Hero phablet and the Idol X flagship, it fluffed the low- and midrange with the Idol Alpha, Idol S and Idol mini.

The metallic Alcatel Idol Alpha with shiny translucent edges is a just 7.5 mm thin 4.7-incher with HD LCD display, protected by Asahis Dragontrail glass, with a hearty 13 MP camera on the back. Those edges light up in different colors for notification and mood-setting purposes while watching a video, for instance.

The phone is powered by a quad-core 1.2 GHz processor, likely a MediaTek endeavor, judging from the rest of the gang, sports 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory, but there is no microSD slot listed in the specs sheet. A 2000 mAh battery keeps the light on, which is not much for todays standards at this screen size, but enough for 10 hours of talk time in 3G mode. The supported 4G cellular frequencies indicate the Idol Alpha is destined mainly for the European/Asian markets.

The next entrance is Alcatel Idol S, whose metallic red color pops immediately, but it takes things more mainstream, with the same 4.7" 720x1280 screen, but 8 MP camera and a dual-core 1.2 GHz MediaTek CPU. Its 4 GB of storage can be expanded with a microSD slot, however, and it is an LTE device, again with European bands. Powered by the same 2000 mAh as the Alpha, the Idol S is listed as good for 8.5 hours of talk time in 3G mode, which is below average.

Finally, what would a mobile phone portfolio be today without a "mini" title in it, and Alcatel hops on the bandwagon with the Idol mini - a 4.3" handset with 480x854 pixels of resolution. It will have a dual SIM version as well, which will double the amount of internal storage available to you from 4 GB for the single SIM to 8 GB, though the single SIM Idol mini has a microSD slot for expansion. A 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 5 MP rear camera with HD video recording and 1700 mAh juicer round up the tiny offering, which comes in various metallic colors.

All of the handsets above are running on Android 4.2, and knowing Alcatel, the experience will be mostly stock. Price and availability will be added at a later date, but again knowing Alcatel, the new phones are likely to be a very good value for their money.(PhoneArena)
