Nintendo seen reluctant on radical shift as Wii U worries deepen

Nintendo Co Ltd will likely be reluctant to make radical changes such as allowing its games to be played on rivals devices as it grapples with poor sales of its flagship Wii U game console, which forced it to slash its outlook and sent its shares tumbling.

Unlike rivals Microsoft Corp and Sony Corp, whose recently released XBox One and PlayStation 4 have seen strong sales, the creator of "Super Mario" has resisted pressure to open up game development to other firms.

Nintendo relies on the popularity of its franchises, such as Mario and Zelda, to drive sales of its hardware. Some analysts say Nintendo is missing out, however, by not releasing a version of its games for smartphones or tablets, which now exceed 1 billion in use and account for a rising proportion of games played.

But there are no signs that Nintendo, which plans to unveil a new management strategy on January 30 after releasing quarterly results, is likely to soften its stance.

"I think the company needs to see more failure before anything more radical is considered," said David Gibson, senior research analyst of games at Macquarie Securities in Tokyo.

"Its like a couple of wheels stuck in the mud. We all think theyre heading for deeper mud but theyre not convinced as such. Theyre going to try to change a little bit and move this way and that and do a new strategy."

SUBTLE CHANGE

The company, which warned on Friday that it now expects its third successive year of operating losses after previously forecasting a profit of 100 billion yen for the year to end-March, promised changes.

"Its right to question whether Nintendo should continue to use the same model of selling a console for 20,000 yen to 30,000 yen and games for several thousand yen each, and so if you ask if we are thinking about a new business structure, the answer is yes," CEO Satoru Iwata told reporters in Osaka on Friday.

But he dismissed the idea that the rise of games on smartphones and tablets would usher in the decline of game consoles.

"Its not something as simple as the spread of smart devices meaning that game machines wont sell," he said. "If we offer something that is in line with the changes around us today, I think people will still need game machines."

Iwata, who has long opposed relinquishing control over software, also said he would not be stepping down and there would be no management reshuffle.

A more subtle change in gear could involve selling Wii U or 3DS games for as little as $1 or a free-to-play model, Macquaries Gibson suggested, or creating a lower-priced handheld device to attract a younger audience.

Iwata has long maintained that the value of Nintendos games and consoles comes from their simultaneous in-house development and that allowing other companies to develop games or licensing their own to be played on other devices would affect their quality.

"If we were going to provide Mario for other platforms and if Nintendo stops being the hardware manufacturer, then actually in terms of sales and profit, it might make sense for us in this fiscal year but Mario is going to lose its inherent value," he told media at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) last June.

Analysts attributed weak Wii U sales to its lack of differentiation from its predecessor, Wii, which propelled Nintendo shares to a record high of 73,200 yen in November 2007. The stock has lost more than 80 percent since then.

Nintendo shares closed down 6.2 pct on Monday, wiping off about $1.2 billion from its market capitalisation, although this was a substantial recovery from the open when it fell 18.4 percent. Nintendo suppliers also came under pressure, with Hosiden Corp down 6.4 percent, MegaChips Corp off 4 percent and Mitsumi Electric Co Ltd down 4.3 percent.

Nokia XL hands on

The Nokia showroom floor at the MWC 2014 is chock full of people eager to see Android running on Nokia hardware. We’ve managed to get cozy with the Nokia XL for a minute and we’re now going to tell you all about it.



The Nokia XL features a 5″ IPS LCD display of WVGA resolution and it’s bad at all even though we’re used to seeing FullHD resolution on this sort of screen sizes.

At €109 it’s a cheap phone to begin with, so we weren’t expecting that much, but the screen’s colors are nice even though contrast isn’t that great. As you’ll see from the live Nokia XL photos below, it gets covered in fingerprint smudges very easily.

As far as the Android experience on the Nokia XL, it’s very fluid and smooth. The phone runs a version of Jelly Bean as far as we could tell, but no one specified which one. The 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 chipset does a good job of opening and running apps as well as switching between them.

Nokia has also included a bunch of its Lumia apps on the XL including its Store, Camera, Mix Radio and HERE Maps. Microsoft’s presence is also felt with the addition of Skype and OneCloud apps. Speaking of which, XL users will get 10GB of free OneCloud storage as well as 1 month free of Skype Premium. Speaking of goodies, Nokia also includes a 4GB microSD card in the XL’s package.

The Nokia XL features a plastic build with an exclusive color, which the X and X+ don’t get – bright orange. It feels very nice to the touch, similar to the Nokia Asha 501 and Lumia 1320.

At the back of the phone, there’s a 5MP snapper with LED flash. As you can see from the photos, there’s a large physical key below the display, which acts like a Home/back button. The user interface is overly simple, too, with two main screens – the app list screen and the Fastlane UI.

The app list is reminiscent of the home screen of the Windows Phone 8 UI and features app tiles, which can be resized. The larger the tile, the more information it displays. For example, expanding the People’s tile will display your favorite contacts, while the Gallery will display the latest photos you’ve snapped.

HTC and Qualcomm are working on a work around for the HTC One chip that might be infringing Nokias patents

According to a September 23 preliminary ITC ruling, HTC is infringing on Nokia’s patents with the One, and its construction. The patent refers to transmission and phone call reception enhancement, and last week, Nokia scored a win against HTC in a US court.

The Wall Street Journal quotes people familiar with the matter that claim knowledge of HTC and Qualcomm joint efforts to alter the chip inside the One, in order to prevent an import ban. The ITC will consider the matter in January and, if the preliminary ruling will be still in place, HTC imports (not only for the One) could be banned in the US, unless the Taiwanese phone maker successfully tweaks the chip to stop, together with Qualcomm, the infringement.Pocketnow
