Games Street Fighter IV May Get Expanded Roster For Console Ports

Street fighter iv may expanded for console ports Street Fighter IV were to be ported to home console. If, in the odd chance that Capcom were to approve such a product, which they officially havent yet, it could arrive with a stable of new fighters not seen in the arcade release. Thats one nearly unbelievable future for Street Fighter IV, says the games producer Yoshinori Ono in a new Wired Game|Life interview.

Ono tells Chris "Chun-Li Lighting Leg Spam" Kohler that SFIV home ports could see appearances from Sakura from Street Fighter Alpha or Ibuki from Street Fighter III, for example, and that the team is listening to fan requests with regard to the character roster.

According to the piece, sounds like Ono is taking the perception that Street Fighter III was limited to an "exclusive club" of fighting fans seriously.

Nintendo DSi

Nintendo DSi is the third iteration of the DS, which was originally released in November 2004. In June 2006, the company refreshed the system in the form of the DS Lite, which dramatically changed the devices overall design and vastly improved screen performance. Rumors of a second redesign proved to be a reality when Nintendo announced the most recent, and what we believe to be the final rehash of the system, Nintendo DSi. This upgrade adds two small resolution cameras to the portable, slightly larger screens, and an SD card slot.

The Game Boy Advance slot found in both previous versions has been removed. While current DS Lite owners may want to think twice about upgrading, Nintendo DSi does offer plenty of innovative media features and online functionality that may warrant a purchase. Those who still have the original DS should definitely consider the step up as well but if youve been holding out on a DS purchase up until now, Nintendo DSi is certainly the way go. If you own or have held a DS Lite, the first thing youll notice about Nintendo DSi is its sturdiness.

It definitely feels more robust than Nintendo DSi Lite. That said, youll find it isnt any heavier as both weigh just under half a pound. While Nintendo DSi Lite is coated in a shinny plastic, Nintendo DSi is covered in a matte, almost rubberized outer layer. While we didnt scuff it up during our testing, it appears this covering will be more prone to such cosmetic scratches. Size wise, Nintendo DSi is only about 4 millimeters thinner than the Lite and just 5 millimeters wider.

Side by side, you wont notice much of a different in appearance. The two LED lights found on the right hinge of the Lite are gone, replaced by a set of three on the left hinge of Nintendo DSi. Theyre also labeled this time around, with symbols for power, charging, and Wi-Fi activity. Every button on the system has been changed as Nintendo has opted for buttons that click more, as opposed to the softer experience had with the Lite. The X, A, B, and Y buttons arent as deep, thus they require less of a pressing motion. The same can be said for the L and R rear buttons, too they are now much more springy, and require much less of an effort to engage.

Even the select and start buttons have gotten a similar treatment we found them especially difficult to press with Nintendo DSi Lite. Moving along to the D-pad, we experienced the same sort of click responsiveness. The DS Lites D-pad, a carbon copy of the one found on a Wii remote, was a bit looser. The power button has been moved to the bottom left of the lower touch screen. A long tap will power the device on and off, while a short tap (when Nintendo DSi is on) with give you a soft reset, something you could not do on any other DS.

Microphone placement remains the same, although the internal camera is now centered with the mic just to its right. Nintendo DSis two screens are noticeably larger, especially when switching back and forth between systems. That said, we could not really detect huge improvements in overall brightness and color performance. The units two stereo speakers, located on either side of the top screen, seem to have been lowered about half an inch. On the outside of Nintendo DSi youll find a few more noticeable changes.

First off, the Game Boy Advance slot has been removed, so fans of that handheld platform are out of luck. While we believe this omission helped shrink the devices thickness, we wish it had survived the update. Wed gladly give up the 4 millimeters to be able to play any Game Boy Advance game. The headphone jack remains in the same spot, but the volume slider found on the Lites front left edge has been moved and converted into a push button format on the left side.

Well agree with the movement of the controls, but we definitely prefer a slider as opposed to buttons. Its much easier to mute the device by sliding your thumb compared with holding down a button for a few seconds. The devices SD card slot is located on the right edge. As mentioned earlier, Nintendo DSi has two 0.3 megapixel cameras : one located on the inner hinge, the other on the outside front cover. A pink LED light glows when the outer camera is active. The outer casing also abandons the vertical square DS logo modeled in the plastic found on the DS Lite. The included stylus is mounted in the same rear location as the DS Lite, and Nintendo supplies you with a spare.

Omate TrueSmart Watch goes long

The next big Kickstarter project has been doing great guns, exceeding its target and going into production for sure.

We liked it so much, we have backed the project with our own cash.......

Neat and waterproof this interesting project has been approved for Google Play Store access, yes on a smartwatch ?! The OS looks a little like the Moto Actv, but its far more functional.

Kickstart for this awesome project is still open - for $189 you can jump on board before the 27 days is up. With a retail of $299 the kickstarter price is a bargain....Interested ? read on here Omate TrueSmart at Kickstarter.

Their latest update is as follows :-

Welcome to Omate TrueSmart. Our first official Update - Must start with a BIG THANKS to everyone for such a great Kickstart.
Your funding has helped us start production preparations already, thats the first good news. The funding goal has been secured. Now, the Omate Team is focusing on Time-To-Market and is dedicated to deliver the TrueSmart on time and on quality - Developers in October and Users in November.
The second good news is: :
Omate TrueSmart will be shipped with Google Play apps store included.
There has been a consideration that not all apps in the Google Play apps store may give the best experience on the wrist. We may still consider having an additional App store or other methods such as a directory or list to help users spot and get Apps that have been tested to be a great experience with the Omate TrueSmart. This would also allow us to help Developers highlight and promote their TrueSmart / Smartwatch apps (or Smartwatch version of their apps).
With Google Play apps store support, users and developers would have the ability to try and tests all kinds of apps - the Worlds largest collection of Apps. Powered by a Dual-core 1.3GHz processor and a full Android 4.2.2, a new world opens that no other Smartwatch has done before. We hope this will stimulate ideas, discussions and interaction for the better of TrueSmarrt / Smartwatch app environment. It is about time (pardon the pun) for Smartwatch 2.0
A shout out to all supporters who have contributed to this discussion of Google Play apps store here on the Project or on our Google+ community (+Omate TrueSmart). Together we shall make Omate TrueSmart the TrueSmart aka Smartwatch 2.0 aka The Peoples Smartwatch - Thanks!
See you in the next Update and in the community.

Sony Ericsson S500i

As we mentioned, the S500i is a very stylish and eye catching handset. It has a classy and sophisticated appearance, and there are even glowing LEDs along the sides whenever its activated, making it appear extra sparkly. Not only is the S500i sleek, its also compact, measuring only 3.9 inches by 1.8 inches by 0.5 inch and weighing about 3.3 ounces. The S500i is one of a few phones that Sony Ericsson has manufactured in a slider design, the others being the W580i and the W850i.

We like the slider mechanism quite a bit the movement was smooth yet sturdy, and didnt feel too loose at all. There is a slight sloping curl along the chin of the phone that you can use to push the phone open, and to close it, you can slide your thumb down on the raised toggle making the entire sliding process completely one handed. The Sony Ericsson S500i has a 2 megapixel camera on the back. The beauty of the S500is display cant be denied.

It measures a little more than 2 inches diagonally and supports 262.000 colors and a lovely 240x320 pixel resolution. Colors popped from the screen and images showed up well.

You can adjust the phones brightness and thats about it. Underneath the display is the navigation array, which consists of two skinny soft keys, a circular toggle with a central OK key, a Back key, a Clear key, a dedicated Web access key, plus a key dedicated to opening a My Shortcuts menu.

The circular toggle also doubles as four user defined shortcuts. Even though we found the toggle easy to use, we thought the surrounding keys felt a bit too small for our taste. This is especially true for the two soft keys, which are extremely skinny. Slide open the phone and youll find a pretty decent number keypad. We were surprised that the keys werent as flat as most keys on slider handsets.

There was noticeable textural difference between each tile like key, and the keys have a nice give when pressed. That said, the keypad did feel a tiny bit crowded and some users have complained about the keys cracking, though that was not a problem we encountered. Theres a lovely white backlight emanating from the keypad when the phone is activated.

A slim volume control rests on the left spine, while the charger or headset jack is on the right. On top of the S500i is the memory stick slot plus the Power button. We wished the Power button was a bit larger, but it wasnt too difficult to press. Also, if you slide up the phone, youll reveal a camera lens on the back of the phone. Theres no flash or self portrait mirror, however.

Oral Sex Light Illuminates Your Dongle

The product is called the Oral Sex Light. Were not too sure much of an explanation except NSFW explanation image mentioned below.

Oral sex light product Graphic image aside, the Oral Sex Light will set you back $13.99, and mounts (ha) via a clip-on ear piece. The torch attached is completely flexible, meaning you can totally scope out those hard to find regions. Unfortunately, if you ever did try to wow a date with your I-come-prepared attitude, shell likely be out of the door quicker than she could say, "What the hell was I doing there in the first place?" At that point, youll have to make use of the Oral Sex Light on your own, which will be an even sadder and more twisted state of affairs than normal.

Why some bloggers and Tech are just phoney

One thing I have noticed over the last 4-6 years, and I guess you have too, is the word Tech being bounced around a lot more than it used to.

Tech was never used to describe a phone or a home computer even, but mostly used in the IT industry, a "Technie" was someone who provided 3rd level or beyond or worked in a data centre doing something like infrastructure support, either through the data network or for various hardware platforms; mostly not point and click Microsoft "Engineers" no marks.

Roll on 6 years and now the interweb is awash with so called "Techies" that dont really fit into any of the a fore mentioned categories, yet they blog away (some even paid to do so, more on that shortly) with the contempt to use the word "Techie" or "Tech" - Im very sorry but I rarely use that word here on this blog, for the reason that a phone just isnt Tech, or a tablet or anything handheld or the user that owns them. Now you could argue that installing a ROM or rooting a bootloader is technical, maybe it is but thats just one process, which is very well documented on the web anyway. So any idiot can fire up YouTube and copy the commands / process with minimal risk, even if they do mess things up the worst case is they mess up a handset costing £600. Hardly a big deal is it ? When a proper "Techie" has a blue chips company by the balls over the course of a hard weekend of highly risky process, which can be sued for millions of £££ if it goes wrong, the knowledge he / she has to have is what I call Technical.

Channel 5s The Gadget Show is a classic example of watering down a word to suit the masses of finger swipers who think that finding the WiFi button on a Samsung Android Camera is an epic win.  Please just stop already.

Then we get onto the bloggers who are paid to blog, this really gets my goat. Here is why, no its not jealousy, I dont want to be paid to blog. This blog is a side line to my larger career - which involves over 25yrs of IT from all sectors, clients, businesses (mostly in the enterprise) and all sorts of positions from freelance consulting to Subject Matter Expert. So why would I want to be paid to pick up a gadget and tell all about it of give my views on a sector which is fast paced. Well I dont want to, I want to keep IHAG as impartial as they come. Which makes the views cast here not subject to a corporate kick in the face if I dare to say the Sony Z1 does actually have crappy battery life when the screen is being used.

When money is involved credibility and impartial views are out the window, just pick up any newspaper that is part funded by some political party to get the gist.

Also throw in the debacle last week of many bloggers "re-blogging" an eveleaks tweet all over the Googleverse that left many-a-blogger with egg on their faces, because the information that was 3rd hand was actually complete bollocks to begin with.

I have tried to take this up with a few fellow bloggers which I have discovered do actually receive a payment for their reviews of a said item, many of them decided to throw the old - "Ah your spamming me" or "You are wrong because xyz" when discussing an item they just blogged about. Sure they can get paid and defend their views, thats their right to do so but their blog and subsequent reviews are just as phoney as the word "Tech".

Rant over !

Samsung Mondi SWD M100

Samsung Mondi SWD-M100s size. At 4.88 inches by 3.03 inches by 0.63 inch and 6.39 ounces, its bigger than any cell phone thats crossed our desk in years. It wont fit in your pocket and it will take up significant space in a purse or a backpack. Some reviewers have rightfully griped that Samsung Mondi SWD-M100 is too big, but we dont see any way around it. And in any case, we figure that those who want Samsung Mondi SWD-M100 will know what theyre getting. On the upside, Samsung Mondi SWD-M100 has a solid construction in the hand, and its slider mechanism has a sturdy feel.

It doesnt click into place at either end, but we slipped it open and closed a few times without hearing any squeaks. On the other hand, the kickstand on the Mondis rear face feels a tad flimsy its easy to knock Samsung Mondi SWD-M100 down if you hit it from the left side. The battery cover is also a bit tricky to pry off, but thats a minor point. Samsung Mondi SWD-M100s biggest design attraction is its 4.3 inch display. With support for 16 million colors (800x480 pixels), its both bright and vibrant with sharp graphics, colors, and photos.

You can change the font size and the brightness and you can assign photos from the camera as wallpaper. The touch screen is responsive, and you can align the interface if you wish. Most icons and touch buttons are big enough for you to use your finger, but youll need the stylus for the window scroll bars. We found it easiest to use the stylus constantly. The touch screen offers vibration feedback and you can adjust the intensity. As previously mentioned, were not thrilled that Samsung chose Windows Mobile 6.1.

For the uninitiated it can be a nightmare to find your way around, but even longtime Windows Mobile users will find it clunky and archaic. For instance, we encountered our own frustrations with searching for files and accessing certain settings. Samsung masks Windows Mobile somewhat with a customizable TouchWiz widget bar and an attractive top level "bubble" interface that shows your messages, e-mails, VoIP calls, and appointments.

We also like the Samsung designed menus that display your contacts and Opera browser bookmarks in a Cover Flow like design thats reminiscent of the iPhones. Once past those screens, however, the familiar Windows Mobile interface greets you. Not only is it a letdown, but its also rather schizophrenic. For example, behind the Samsung designed menu that you can customize with your favorite features, youll need to access the standard Programs menu to access additional features.

Its the same story with the Settings menu you can access some options through an attractive Samsung menu, but you must access the Windows Mobile page to get other options. The experience is jarring and somewhat frustrating. You can enter text in a number of ways. Besides the full physical keyboard behind the sliding face (well get to that in a minute), there are two on screen keyboards and three options for entering text using a graffiti method. The first keyboard comes courtesy of Samsung. It features large buttons that allow you to use your fingers and eight additional keyboards for numbers and symbols.

The space bar is small, but we could tap away rapidly. On the other hand, we dont like that the keyboard pops up automatically each time you tap a text entry field. It even appears if you have the slider open. Theres also a tiny Windows Mobile keyboard that takes up just a quarter of the display we cant imagine why youd want to use it. The graffiti options Transcriber, Block Recognizer, and Letter Recognizer are easy enough to use.

Microsoft Zune third generation 16GB

The design of the flash memory Zune models offered in 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB capacities at $129.99, $149.99, and $199.99 respectively is almost entirely unchanged from the Zunes we reviewed last year. The face of the player is now covered with a glossy plastic that, although pretty, is more prone to smudges and scratches than the matte finish on last years model. The flash based Zune measures the same 3.6 inches by 1.6 inches by 0.33 inch as last years. Also, no changes have been made to the Zunes navigation controls, headphone jack, hold switch, dock connection, or 1.8 inch glass covered LCD.

Considering Apples strategy of altering its iPod design every fall (for better or for worse), its a little unnerving to see the Zunes hardware design at a standstill. The upshot of the Zunes lack of design tinkering is that it maintains the products compatibility with the handful of accessories designed for the player. The Zune comes packaged with a proprietary USB cable and a pair of earbuds with three sets of replaceable foam pads.

Features
The bulk of the third generation Zunes improvements are found by flicking through its main menu. New menu items for Games and Marketplace have been added alongside existing selections for Music, Videos, Pictures, Social, Radio, Podcasts, and Settings. The Zunes primary purpose as a high quality portable music player hasnt changed.

If anything, the enhancements offered by the third generation firmware have bolstered the unique music discovery and sharing features that have differentiated the Zune from the very beginning.

One of the more notable new features on the Zune is a Marketplace selection in the main menu that allows you to browse, preview, and download music directly from Microsofts Zune Marketplace online store. Within the Marketplace submenu you can choose between browsing Top Songs, Top Albums, and New Releases, or search for specific music by keying in a few letters. Songs can be previewed for 30 seconds with the option to add them to your virtual cart or purchase and download immediately.

By signing up for Microsofts Zune Pass music subscription service (a free 14 day trial is available), you can download unlimited music to your Zune for a flat fee of $15 a month. Otherwise, youll need to purchase songs a la carte by setting up a payment account in the Zune desktop software.

Sony Cyber shot DSC W120

The attractive, metal W120 is available in black, silver, blue, and pink versions. Curiously, the step up W130 only comes in silver, black, and pink. The inch thick camera weighs just 5.4 ounces with battery and Memory Stick Duo card, and slips easily into most pockets. On the backside of the camera, a 2.5 inch LCD leaves room for a small optical viewfinder, a mode dial, and a handful of buttons.

While the small, flat controls feel more comfortable than the last generation W90s buttons, they still seem a bit small for larger thumbs. The 7 megapixel shooter includes a 32-128mm equivalent, f/2.8-5.8 lens with Sonys Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization. The lens offers a slightly longer than usual 4x optical zoom, though slight barrel distortion is present at its widest angle.

A 9 point auto focus system helps the camera lock onto subjects, and face detection can automatically adjust focus and exposure to suit the faces in your pictures. Adult and Child Priority face detection modes can differentiate between and focus primarily on children or adults in group photos, and Smile Shutter mode automatically captures photos when subjects smile.

Sonys Photo Music, an in camera slide show program, lets users show off their photos either on the cameras 2.5 inch screen or, with an optional video connector, on an HDTV. The slide shows can use a variety of transition effects, and users can upload their own soundtracks to the camera.

Despite its broad feature set, the W120 leaves out many of the on board retouching and picture editing tools found on most other W- and T-series cameras. Its brother, the W130, comes with several photo filters, such as radial blur, fish eye lens, and unsharp masking. The W120 can only rotate and resize pictures in the camera. A lot of these in camera editing features are more flashy than functional, but it would have been nice to include at least a digital red eye removal.

Rovio Freshplanet Pocket Gems and others talk about building games on Google Cloud Platform

Steven Hauk of Rovio says that the most important thing to Rovio is “to delight our fans with great games and good products. And Google Cloud Platform allows us to focus on just that.”

When Rovio ships a new version of Angry Birds, they don’t have to provision new hardware in order to serve over 250 million active users. And since Songpop launched and eventually reached nearly 100 million users across the world, its creators at Freshplanet never worried about whether their servers will be able to handle the load.

That’s because these games are built on Google Cloud Platform - which is designed to scale smoothly whenever you need it.

Hear more from Rovio, Freshplanet, Pocketgems and others talk about building games on Google Cloud Platform in this video:

Java App Engine outage July 14 2011

On July 14, 2011, beginning at 7 PM US/Pacific time (PDT/GMT-7), a subset of Java App Engine applications were affected by a service outage, which gradually increased in magnitude over time. At 9:30 PM US/Pacific, repair work commenced which began to reduce the effect of the outage; by 11:30 PM US/Pacific, the repair work had completed, restoring normal service to all Java App Engine applications.

During this period, affected applications would have experienced high latency and error rates. This outage occurred shortly after a scheduled maintenance period; however, the outage was not related to the maintenance work.

Overall reliability, quick return to service, and fast, accurate communication to our customers are some of the core goals of Google App Engines service offering. While we restored service relatively quickly, its clear to us that we fell short in prompt communication of status updates. We apologize for this, and well look at our procedures to improve our performance in this area.

In the meantime, we have a preliminary understanding of the outage, and we are continuing our investigation to insure that we have fully repaired the root cause. We will publish a detailed postmortem once we have concluded our research. Thanks again for your patience and understanding.

[Edit] Clarification: no HR datastore apps were affected. Overall, the outage resulted in a 1.9% error rate, affecting approximately 0.005% of all App Engine traffic at peak.

Review Samsung Galaxy Note 3

After getting my Samsung Galaxy S3, Ive been showered by advertisement telling me to get the great next thing. I caved in and decided to upgrade my phone to the Samsung galaxy Note 3; Ive always thought that the phablets will always be too big for me, and includes features that I will never need. However, after juggling whether or not i wanted a phone and a tablet or simply have a phablet, I have made the right investment. Large screen, light weight and powerful - the Samsung Note 3 definitely exceeded my expectation and allows me to do more on my phone.

First impression:
At first glance, you will think that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is heavy due to its screen size - weighing at about 5.93 oz but the weight is distributed so well that the phone actually feels very light; at 5.7 inch in screen the phone sits comfortably on my hand.  The Note 3 comes with an interesting back design, which has a leather like pattern, yet is plastic. One feature that makes the Note 3 stands out is the S pen, which allows you to navigate through your snow and access pen only features (which we will get into). Pen is super responsive and allows me to throw away my pen and paper notes and go all digital. The phone also packs up multiple sensors that can help you use your phone better (air gesture, eye tracking, ect.). As always, changing phones between android is seamless as all my contacts and setting are pretty much synced together once I sign in to my accounts.

Test Drive:
Like I said, if you are upgrading from an Android phone (especially Samsung phones) you will not have a problem in getting your information transferred. Browsing around the phone, I feel that it is snappier and very responsive. Samsung also added feature that allows you to control your phone, they added sensors to track your eyes which allows phone to stay active as long as you are looking at it, or scroll through webpages when you are done reading them. They also includes air gesture that offers similar function except with gesture. I personally only used the face tracker as I read a lot on the phone and it keeps my phone from shutting even though I have not touched it in awhile. The larger screen allows you to have more real estate areas especially when you are trying to multitask (using the multiple window feature) or the pen window. 4G connectivity is solid and phone signal is much stronger then the previous model as now I am getting reception in places where my old phone could not. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 sports a 13 Mega Pixel camera, which takes pretty decent pictures, the camera by default was not setup to its maximum resolution so be sure to change them otherwise you will get pictures with lower quality on your big screen.

The highlight of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is the S pen, and I am in love with it. The main difference of the S pen compared to a regular stylus is that it has a sharp tip, giving you precision when you are going to write/draw with it. The S pen is stored conveniently in the bottom right of the phone, and when you take it out it will prompt an S pen menu that allows you to do awesome stuff:
  • Action Memo: popped out a sticky page that you can write on with different per colors. Good for taking quick notes
  • Scrap Booker: Draw a shape on the screen to keep them in your scrapbook for reference later
  • Screen Write: Able to instantly write on your screen and save it as an image
  • S Finder: Able to find various things both in your phone and online
  • Pen Window: Draws a small window and is able to run compatible adds using the window size you drew.

The pen is very responsive and is able to detect my handwriting pretty well to be transcribed to text.

Battery life is one of the best thing I enjoyed out of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. With the USB 3.0, the phone charges from 1% to full within about 3 hours and is able to hold that charge for about a day. With my usual use of the phone (email sync, occasional texting, soundcloud, and reading a couple of chapters from Play book) the battery in the phone stayed for the whole day before I need to charge it (around 8.00 AM - 9.00 PM), which really makes me feel more comfortable using my phone knowing that it will last for the day.

Conclusion:
The main reason I wanted to invest on a phablet was because I was torn apart between getting a phone and a tablet, with the unlimited internet I have in my phone I do no want to have another device where I have to pay extra for internet; I also do not want to worry about charging another device before I go to bed. With a phablet like this, I do not have to worry about having 2 devices but still have the real estate of a tablet but the convenience of a phone. The S pen removed my need of carrying pen and paper the whole time as it will be in my phone and the long battery life gives me a worry free use of the phone. As a student, I dont think I have pushed the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to its limit - but it sure has succeeded what I needed. Prices has been varied online between $600 - $800, if you can snatch up a deal (such as getting it with a contract for U.S. Carrier) this phone is definitely worth every bang of its buck.

YouTube Mobile Gets a Kick Start

(Cross-posted with the YouTube Blog)

It’s well known that the mobile internet is huge and growing fast; what’s surprising is exactly how fast. According to a recent report, within 5 years more users will connect to the internet via mobile devices than desktop PCs. YouTube consumption on mobile devices has also grown considerably -- playbacks were up 160% in 2009 over the previous year. And we’re excited to announce that YouTube Mobile now receives more than 100 million video playbacks a day. This is roughly the number of daily playbacks that YouTube.com was streaming when we joined forces with Google in 2006.

We launched YouTube on mobile devices in 2007 with about 1,000 videos available on the mobile site (m.youtube.com). While this suddenly opened up the possibility to access videos on the go, our site, mobile browsers and the hardware had limitations that prevented the mobile experience from keeping up with YouTube on the desktop. Today, more than ever, we know that you want to be able to find and access your favorite videos wherever you are. That’s why we’ve been working hard to roll out an updated version of the mobile site.

Heres whats new about the new mobile site:
  • Its really fast.
  • The new user interface incorporates larger, more touch friendly elements, making it easier to access videos on the go.
  • It incorporates the features and functionality you’ve come to expect from the .com site, like search query suggestions, the options to create playlists, the ability to designate “favorite,” “like,” or “unlike” videos directly from your device.
  • As we make improvements to Youtube.com, you’ll see them quickly follow on our mobile site, unlike native apps which are not updated as frequently.
As the world continues to go mobile, we think this is a great improvement for users who want a more consistent YouTube across many devices, no matter where they are. Were launching in English only today, but will be rolling it out in other languages in the coming months. You can access the latest YouTube mobile site from your iPhone or Android browser. To learn more, visit m.youtube.com to check out the latest improvements and take a minute to watch this demo video:

Best practices for App Engine memcache and eventual vs strong consistency

We have published two new articles about best practices for App Engine. Are you aware of the best ways to keep Memcache and Datastore in sync? The article Best Practices for App Engine Memcache discusses concurrency, performanceand migration with Memcache to make you aware of potential pitfalls and to help you build more robust code.

Do you know how to make your App Engine application faster and more scalable by using eventual consistency? If not, take a look at a new article that explains the difference between eventual and strong consistency. The paper will help you leverage Datastore to scale your apps to millions of happy customers.

Concurrency, performance and migration in memcache

Memcache is a cache service for App Engine applications that is shared by multiple frontend instances and requests. It provides in-memory, temporary storage that is intended primarily as a cache for rapid retrieval of data thats backed by some form of persistent storage, such as Google Cloud Datastore.

Using Memcache will speed up your applications response to requests and reduce hits to the datastore (which in turn saves you money). However, keeping Memcache data synchronized with data in the persistent storage can be challenging when multiple clients modify the application data.

Transactional data sources, such as relational databases or Google Cloud Datastore, coordinate concurrent access by multiple clients. However, Memcache is not transactional, and theres a chance that two clients will simultaneously modify the same piece of data in Memcache. As a result, the data stored may be incorrect. Concurrency problems can be hard to detect because often they do not appear until the application is under load from many users.

With App Engine, you can use the “compare and set” (Client.cas()) function to coordinate concurrent access to memcache. However, if your application uses the compare and set function, it must be prepared to do the error handling and retry.

We recommend that you use the atomic Memcache functions where possible, including incr() and decr(), and use the cas() function for coordinating concurrent access. Use the Python NDB API if the application uses Memcache as a way to optimize reading and writing to Google Cloud Datastore. Read more Best Practices for App Engine Memcache in our newly published paper.

Balancing strong and eventual consistency

Web applications that require high-scalability often use NoSQL which offers eventual consistency for improved scalability. However, if youre used to the strong consistency that relational databases offer, it can be a bit of a mind shift to get your head around the eventual consistency of NoSQL data stores. Google Datastore allows you to choose between strong and eventual consistency, balancing the strengths of each.

Traditional relational databases provide strong consistency of their data, also called immediate consistency. This means that data viewed immediately after an update will be consistent for all observers of the entity. Use cases that require strong consistency include knowing “whether or not a user finished the billing process” or “the number of points a game player earned during a battle session.” It also means that all requests to view the updated data are blocked until all the writes required for strong consistency have finished.

Eventual consistency, on the other hand, means that all reads of the entity will eventually return the last updated value but might return inconsistent views of the data in the meantime. For example, knowing “who in your buddy list is online” or “how many users have +1’d your post” are cases where strong consistency is not required. Your application can get higher scalability and performance by leveraging eventual consistency, because your application wont have to wait for all the writes to complete before returning results.

The following two diagrams illustrate strong versus eventual consistency:

Eventual conistency

Strong consistency

Twitter files for IPO chirps announcement in a tweet

Not a very secret IPO, Twitter

Twitter files for IPO, chirps announcement in a tweet

Twitter is following Facebooks lead and going public.
The microblogging site announced in appropriate 140-character form that it has "confidentially submitted" its IPO registration with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

We asked for follow up from Twitter, and were told that the only comment its offering is its tweet.
The company is taking advantage of a new "secret" IPO provision in 2012s JOBs Act. According to Business Insider, companies with less than $1 billion (about £63m, AU$1.07b) in revenue can submit an initial SEC filing without having to make documents typically associated with the process public.

Twitters financials dont have to become public until 21 days before its "roadshow," or the time it wil pitch its stock to investors.

Facebooks footsteps

Weirdly, news of Twitters filing comes one day after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was asked at TechCrunch Disrupt if he had any advice for Twitter on its then unannounced but fully expected IPO.

"Im kind of the person youd want to ask last about how to make a smooth IPO," Zuckerberg said to chuckles, referring to Facebooks problem-laden public offering.

"I actually think that .... Read the rest of this post ---->

Sony Ericsson Bao mobile handset spotted

Sony Ericsson logo has been revealed. Very little else is known about the Sony Ericsson Bao apart from the fact that it comes with a built-in camera. It does show that the Sony Ericsson Bao features an “angular” design reminiscent to that of the Nokia Prism range and is of a clamshell form factor. The camera’s resolution remains unknown. Details about its price and release date are also unavailable for now. This might be another of Sony Ericsson’s inexpensive phone.

ASUS Padfone Mini is official

In the tradition of offering less powerful, and hopefully less expensive, versions of a hit product, ASUS has unveiled the ASUS PadFone Mini in Taiwan. So far, all the rumored specs have panned out, making this unique device somewhat of a disappointment but, at the same time, probably a more affordable alternative to those who want such a hybrid device.

The smartphone itself clocks a bit larger than previous speculated specs, with a 4.3-inch diagonal span. The resolution, however, was on the mark at 960×540 pixels. The phone runs on a 1.4 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU, with 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. Buyers will also be given 5 GB worth of ASUS WebStorage and can also opt to expand capacity with a microSD card. The smartphone has an 8 megapixel rear camera with an LED flash and f/2.0 aperture, while the front sports a 2 megapixel camera. The tablet dock measures 7 inches and has a screen resolution of 1280×800. It also sports its own 2200 mAh battery. Together, the contraption will weigh 415 g, combining the smartphone’s 105 g with the tablet’s 310 g weight.

While the PadFone Mini’s reason for existence might make sense on some level, offering buyers another size option, the recently seen PadFone E doesn’t. This latter one seems to be a hybrid of a hybrid form factor, offering a 4.7-inch smartphone that is only slightly smaller than the PadFone Infinity’s 5 inches but, at the same time, gets paired up with an equally large 10.1-inch tablet dock. Below is ASUS’ promotional video for the PadFone Mini, which shows the device with dual SIM support similar to the rumored PadFone E.

Details of the availability of the ASUS PadFone Mini have not yet been disclosed and it is unknown which Taiwanese carriers will be offering the device. It is, however, expected to sell for 11,900 NTD, or around $400. Three color options of chocolate black, white, and cherry milk were advertised but only the black models are available so far.

Brand New Xbox One Details from Xbox’s Major Nelson and Marc Whitten

This week, our own Major Nelson sat down for a podcast interview with Marc Whitten, Xbox chief product officer, to talk about Xbox One, including new details about the state of the platform, juicy hardware specs and much more.

According to Marc, this is when Xbox One evolves from specs and theory to reality, and in order to ensure the console is working flawlessly, the team has kicked off the Xbox One internal beta.  Xbox One consoles are currently in the homes of lucky Microsoft employees who are putting it through its paces and working closely with the development team to get everything ready for launch.

In the podcast, Marc also talks about the work the team is doing to maximize the power of Xbox One’s hardware. For example, during Xbox One’s product development, they increased its GPU clock speed from 800 MHZ to 853 MHz. In addition, since E3, a new graphics driver, internally referred to as the “mono driver,” has been installed and is 100% optimized for Xbox One.
Marc also hints about more exciting Xbox One news that fans can expect at gamescom, and also touches on the rest of this week’s news about Smart Match, Reputation, Enforcement United and Community Level Program.

You can listen to the full podcast on Major Nelson’s blog.

Unlike New Year Jolla video recording and html5 test

reviewjolla wishes
Unlike New Year 2014 !

Mobile view

Jolla camera takes mp4 videos - which need to be converted to mp4 for showing in the web

For testing the supported video formats in Sailfish Browser, I made a Short HD video clip with Jolla Smartphone at New Years Eve. Lets see which is/are the working way(s) to add a video and see it on Jolla Sailfish Browser:

1A. Original video (mp4mov) and audio, embedded with html5 code:

1B. Converted video (mp4/h264 codec), audio removed. Embedded with html5 code:

3. Youtube embedded video (auto converted by Youtube uploader)

RESULTS (Please comment if have other findings )

HTML5 video embedding, watched in Sailfish Browser

- Videos from the phone must be converted (If Jolla should be able to show its own videos in its own browser)
- Framerate in dark surrounding was only 12 frames per second. Phone should be able to do FullHD recording with better frame rate (15fps or 30fps)
- When converting videos, it might show up upside down. Workaround: Turn your phone to the left (anticlockwise) when recording in landscape.
- The way to succeed: Convert the video with codec h264 (capsulation staying as mp4).

Embedded Youtube, watched in Sailfish Browser

- Video doesnt show in total (this 11 seconds video stops around 7 seconds, while the sound is still going on)
- Comparing the output between Jolla and Computer screen, the Youtube video format (automatic converting when uploaded) is laggy on Jolla
- However, the video starts and isnt upside down. This is the easiest way to show at least something.

HTML5 video, watched in other browsers

- All the biggest browsers heve their own support for HTML5 video formats. For full visibility, two converted versions are needed. In the good side, html5 code doesnt use iframes or Java. Supported formats:
  • Firefox: mp4, webM, ogg
  • Chrome:  mp4, webM, ogg
  • Internet Explorer: mp4
  • Safari:  mp4
  • Opera: webM, ogg

Other notes

Other formats but the phones own (mp4v), and converted mp4a (codec h264)  were not tested in Sailfish Browser, so I can only say that Jolla Browser does not support Jollas camcorder, but it does support h264 codec and html5 video.
